Fix the water → fix the cup. It really is that simple.
Coffee is 98% water. That means your water must taste clean.
Here’s the rule:
If your water tastes weird by itself, your coffee will taste weird too.
If… then… guidance:
If your coffee tastes bitter or harsh: hard water is reacting with the coffee → use filtered.
If your coffee tastes flat or hollow: you may be using softened or overly mineralized water → try clean filtered water.
If your water smells like a pool: that chlorine will show up in your cup → filter immediately.
A cheap filter pitcher is enough. You do NOT need fancy gear.
Boil → then let sit 30–60 seconds.
Too hot = burns flavors.
Too cool = sour and weak.
Simple, consistent rule:
Your water should pour like hot soup, not angry volcano lava.

Bloom Test: If your coffee doesn’t bloom (puff up) when hot water hits it, it’s old.
Scoop Smell Rule: Stick your nose deep in the bag. If the aroma is faint, your cup will be faint too.
Water + Bean Match: Fruity beans shine with softer water; medium roasts are more forgiving with varied water types.
